Background
Coastal regions are very dynamic and contain highly biodiverse ecosystems that provide multiple ecosystem services, contributing significantly to livelihoods and human wellbeing. However, coastal regions also face increasing pressures from climate change, habitat degradation, pollution and resource overexploitation. This international workshop will explore critical aspects of coastal social-ecological systems sustainability. It is organized jointly by the College of the Environment and Ecology (Xiamen University) and the Institute for Future Initiatives (University of Tokyo), bringing together a very interdisciplinary group of researchers to share new insights and approaches for coastal sustainability. The presentations will explore how interdisciplinary science can inform coastal climate change adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable management. By integrating ecological, socioeconomic, and technological perspectives, the workshop seeks to foster collaboration across disciplines and regions, identify emerging research frontiers, and promote innovative solutions that enhance resilience, equity, and long-term sustainability at the land–sea interface.
In this context, we are pleased to announce the Xiangshan Workshop on Coastal social-ecological systems sustainability: change, impacts and responses, scheduled to take place in Xiamen, Fujian, China, November 5th, 2025. The workshop will bring together leading researchers from Xiamen University and University of Tokyo to foster academic exchange, strengthen collaborative networks, and promote innovative approaches toward coastal social-ecological system sustainability.
