
The College of Environment and Ecology (CEE) at Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in March 2011. Research and teaching in ecology date back to 1922, while environmental science emerged in 1982.
The College offers three undergraduate programs (Environmental Science, Ecology, and Environmental and Ecological Engineering), five graduate programs covering both master's and doctoral levels (Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Ecology, and Marine Affairs), and two first-level doctoral programs with associated postdoctoral research stations in Environmental Science and Engineering, and Ecology. Environmental Science was designated as a National Key Discipline in 2007. In 2017 and 2022, Ecology was selected as one of the national Double First-Class disciplines in two consecutive rounds. In 2026, Environmental Science and Ecology ranked in the top 0.899‰ worldwide according to Essential Science Indicators. In addition, Ecology and Environmental Science have been designated as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs.
CEE hosts a variety of high-level scientific research and talent cultivation platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, the National Observation and Research Station for the Taiwan Strait Marine Ecosystem, and the Key Laboratory of Coastal and Wetland Ecosystems of the Ministry of Education.
